Are your teeth darker than they used to be? Want to make them whiter and brighter? If so you've probably thought about teeth whitening. Let's talk about what's involved.
Why are my teeth stained?
Everything we eat and drink can stain our teeth and these stains build-up over time. Common culprits are red wine, coffee, tea, tomato based sauces, curries and beetroot. If it's difficult to clean out of your clothes then it's usually staining your teeth. Smoking causes heavy staining of the teeth. The other reason for staining is age. As we get older the white enamel thins and more of the yellow inner layer of the tooth shows through. In these situations brushing with whitening toothpaste may provide some improvement but will not get your teeth back to the colour they used to be.
What can I do?
Tooth whitening is the simplest, safest and most cost effective way to whiten your teeth. We provide 3 options: in-office whitening, custom take home whitening and a "paint on and go" option.
In office whitening
Whiten your smile in a single visit with professional in-office whitening. This is the easiest and fastest way to achieve a whiter smile. The treatment takes 90 minutes and results are instant. It is not recommended for patients who suffer from tooth sensitivity.
Take home whitening
Models are taken of the teeth and custom trays are made to fit your teeth. Whitening gel is then placed in the trays and the trays placed on the teeth. They are left in place for 45 minutes. When removed you simply brush and rinse the teeth. This process is repeated daily for about 2 weeks or until the desired result in achieved. This is a great option for those who suffer from tooth sensitivity. It is a more gradual whitening treatment than the in-office option but will achieve the same great results.
"Paint on and go" whitening
This is a low concentration mixture and is ideal for touch-ups. It will not produce the same results as in-office and take home whitening. It is simple and convenient to use and small enough to slip in your handbag. Simply paint on, wait 30 seconds then go about your daily life. It should be brushed off 30 minutes later.
How long does it last?
As you continue to enjoy food and drinks that stain, your teeth will gradually stain again. You can use the take home kit or the paint and go option for touch ups. To give you an idea of how often you may need to do this we know a certain red wine drinking dentist who hasn't whitened her teeth for 6 years now (but still gets compliments!).
It is safe?
Yes.
Can I claim it on private health?
Sadly no.
Is it suitable for everyone?
We recommend use for age 16 and above. It should not be used on pregnant or breast feeding women. Any existing fillings, crowns or caps will not whiten. This is only an issue when these are on the front teeth. In this situation the fillings, caps and crowns may need replacement to match the teeth once they are whitened. We will discuss this with you during your consultation.
